House of the Month, one of the
organization's most successful programs, was established to recognize
the efforts of those who work to restore their homes. We select
homes in Crafton that have undergone significant exterior restoration
in keeping with the home's original style. We publicize the owners’
restoration projects in our newsletter and award them bronze plaques,
which we encourage them to display on the front of their homes.
Spring house and garden tours
and our annual Christmas tour showcase our community’s homes
and churches. Over the years, these tours have drawn thousands of
participants from all parts of the city.
Permanent
Recognition
We were successful in having
Creighton Avenue, also known as Banker's Row, recognized as a historic
street by the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation. Less
than ten other streets in the county have been awarded this designation.
Through the efforts of Betsy Martin, a National Register designation
was awarded to the Campbell Building on Noble and East Crafton Avenues.
In 2003, member Neill C. Stouffer was successful in having the Pittsburgh
History and Landmarks Foundation award his former residence at 132
East Crafton Avenue a historic designation. In 1993, the society
presented the borough with a centennial gift - four perimeter signs
that read "Welcome to Historic Crafton." The signs not
only mark the boundaries of Crafton, but enhance awareness of Crafton's
significance as a historic area and convey to others the feeling
of pride we share as residents.
Special
Events
Each year, the society plans events that are open to the community.
These events are designed to bring people together and to raise
funds for our projects.
The Holiday Gala is a special
evening in December when the entire community is invited to gather
for an evening of socializing. Proceeds from the Gala and the auctions
held during the evening benefit the current projects of the society.
Education
In addition to the wealth of history available in our room at Crafton
Public Library, we have developed unique educational opportunities
for residents of all ages.
Trolley Tours provide a pleasant
way for people to enjoy a guided history tour of our community.
Architectural tours for students, led by a docent, are available
for school field trips and youth group activities. Self-guided walking
tours can be done alone or in groups. Old timers remember brings
long-time Crafton residents together to share memories of what the
community used to be. Restoration workshops link residents with
experts on the unique challenges of restoring an older home.
